October 16

Just when I thought I was done with the drama for the semester, I was wrong. I was really wrong. In fact, I think we're just getting started.

I'm still not at all comfortable with the idea of Mom teaching a course here this semester, even though none of us are taking it and, as far as I'm aware, she's only on campus for a few hours each day.

My brother and my best friend had no problem parading their affections at Ludo Vicco's party at the frat house on campus.

When they get together, I often feel like the third wheel. They're making goo-goo eyes at each other. It's actually pretty sickening. No, they're not officially 'a couple' but right now they're about as close to being exclusive as you'll get around this campus. As I've said here, Kay's had a crush on my brother since she was a teenager. At the time I wasn't entirely comfortable with the idea. I'm still not, but better her than practically anyone else.

When this girl Tammy Parker whipped AJ's tush at table tennis (and AJ got mad about it), Kay watched with bemusement.

I should have known better than to accept a date with Kyle Heilman when he asked me out, knowing that Kay had met him first... and liked him first... but with her being so engrossed in her pursuit of AJ, I decided there was no harm in at least going out to dinner with him.

So I went to the burger joint with him (tofu -- I'm a vegetarian, have been since a child), and had a few sips of soda and juice. Kyle and I talked about everything. He's a fine arts major. He's an angler who enjoys fishing and the outdoors. He reminds me a lot of Dad. Anyway, we clicked, almost immediately, and afterwards we'd both decided we had to see each other again at some point.

By the time I walked in, it was well past four in the morning, and who was waiting up for me but Kay. "So -- how did it go?"
"How did what go?"
"Didn't you go out with Kyle?"
"How did you know?"
"Sage, I didn't disappear under a genie lamp, you know."
"Um, actually, Kyle and I had a pretty good time."
Kay laughed. "Pretty good?" she asked. "From the grin on your face, you almost look like you went all the way."
"Come on, Kay, you know I'm not that kind of girl!"

I was on cloud nine when I made myself an apple drink and dashed off to class.

Later that morning (I was in class at the time, Kay told me all this) someone nearly burned down the entire dorm. Apparently they left some waffles cooking in the oven while they went to class. Kay, who had come down to get herself something to eat before classes, called the fire department, who was slow to arrive.

Meanwhile, this one guy, Aaron Matthews, bravely grabbed a fire extinguisher, but the fire was so big, it was too much for one person to handle.

AJ, who had been asleep upstairs, grabbed the other fire extinguisher and helped Aaron out. By the time the firefighters arrived, the fire had been put out.

And even that was nothing compared to what happened that night at Samantha's.

I didn't go to her party because I was still upset with her for what she did. I decided to stay back at the dorm and work on my student art project while I still had some inspiration.

But AJ and Kay went. Bad move, guys.

AJ ran into that girl Cheri who lived in our last dorm, and they were talking a bit. Apparently she was pledging Tri-Fruhm this semester. And I suppose there had to be some kind of flirting or something going on...

...because Kay went absolutely ballistic!

"What were you doing?"
"I -- I wasn't doing anything! We -- uh, we were just talking --"
"It didn't look like you were talking to me."

Cheri was standing there with her cameraphone recording the whole thing!

"You think I don't know about you and Samantha, AJ? I see how you look at her. I see how you look at Cheri. AJ, I have loved you since the moment I first laid eyes on you. And you know what, despite everything, I still love you. But I hate this. I hate what you're doing."

Kay reached over and smacked AJ across the face!

With the raindrops falling, AJ said nothing, his face a blank canvas and his mind racing full of thoughts.
