AJ has said point blank that he 'likes' both girls but can't really decide which one he likes more.
So imagine my surprise when I woke up Tuesday morning and saw him eating cookies downstairs... with Kay. My best friend. And they were laughing and joking. When your brother and your bestie are in close quarters like that, it kind of makes you uneasy. Especially when said bestie has flat-out admitted that she is madly in love with said brother. "Whoever finishes their cookie last is a rotten egg," I heard him say at the tail end of the exchange.
"You know, Kay, this isn't going to be easy," he said between bites.
"What's not going to be easy?"
"Look, I think we -- I think we need to -- cool it -- cool it for awhile."
"Cool what?"
"I just need to -- I just need to concentrate more on school. Get better grades."
Kay burst out in laughter. "Concentrate on school? You're joking, right?"
My brother shook his head no. "I hope you understand."
Nodding her head silently, Kay finished her cookie and walked with me to class.
She spilled the details of the conversation later, when we were in our bedroom.
"He said what?" I asked.
"Something about he was going to concentrate more on his schoolwork."
Now, I didn't know what to tell Kay. A part of me wanted to tell her to be patient with him but a part of me also knew he was seeing Samantha, too, and as far as I knew, he hadn't told her any such thing. Except, I DID see him go to class and I DID see him go to the tutoring session...
...and the three of us (along with another girl, Whitney Harry) were all studying at the café together...so there was a chance that maybe, just maybe, he WAS telling Kay the truth.
The last thing I want is for my brother to have been responsible for breaking my best friend's heart. Guess who'd have to pick up the pieces?
